Presentation of Hungarian consonant clusters in speech
The aim of this speech database is to show the acoustic structure of Hungarian consonant clusters and indirectly to show the coarticulation of these sound combinations. The research (the reference book and this database) represents the first summary of these building blocks of Hungarian speech, no similar work has been published so far..
The structure of the database
The consonant clusters are shown in spoken words. Each cluster is represented by one example word. Four consonant cluster groups are discussed, CC, CCC, CCCC and CCCCC combinations.
As to the CC combinations, every possible form is presented (373 types), the others are represented by the most frequent items (altogether 524 forms).
The words are uttered by a male and a female speaker.
Sound symbols
No IPA symbols are used, but a special sound symbol set, easy to use and understand, has been designed for the representation of speech sounds. Most of these symbols are the corresponding letters as used in Hungarian spelling. In some cases capital letters are used. Here are the sound symbols and the corresponding IPA symbols..
The j+ sound symbol means a hiatus resolution in certain VV combinations.
How to search in the database
Two ways are available for searching sound combinations.
A) Speech sound search (upper left box). Here the sound is given directly. The first step of sound search is the definition of the type of the consonant cluster group (CC, CCC, CCCC, CCCCC). Then we can select the sounds of the cluster using the consonant sound table. Example: the sound combination bd has two consonants, so the CC group has to be selected first. Then click on b in the sound table and after on d. Then click on SEARCH.
B) Letter-based search (lower left box). Here the written form is given and letter sequences are searched (the cluster group need not be defined in this form of search). Attention! Hungarian letters must be used.
The result of the search
A list is given below, containing the words found. In every word item the textual form, the sound form of the word is presented and the sound durations also below the sound symbols.
The box of the word item also contais three command words in brackets: details os sound wave [Det.], basket for acoustic presentation [Bas.1] and [Bas.2].
Acoustic presentation
Two forms of acoustic presentation are available
Wave form in detail [Det.]. The waveform of the word is shown. Sound boundaries can be added to the waveform as well. Zoom fascilities are available with parallel audio demonstration. Sound duration measurements (fine scale) can be done in this picture as well. The wave form can be played with normal, slower, faster speed. Repeated play can be asked for, too (e.g. for one period of a voiced sound).
Compare acoustic structures
You have to place the word into the basket first (click on [Bas.1]). Two words have to be put into the basket as a preparation for the comparison.
The following analysis is available: show waveform with sound boundaries, the spectrogram, the intensity picture. Listening is also available. On a selected part of the waveform duration measurements can be performed and the results are shown in ms as well. The same can be done on spectrograms (frequency is measured and displayed in Hz).
